DISCUSSION OF THE COMPENSATION FOR THE 2018 - 2022 TERM OF COUNCIL

The Committee members discussed the determination of the honouria for the members of the 2018-2022 Term of Council.  The Committee reviewed honouria amounts associated with the adjusting for the on-third tax free allowance.  It was noted that the Federal Government announced it would be removing the one-third tax free provision for elected officials.

The Committee members determined that it would use the median of 13 of the 15 comparator municipalities after removing the information for communities with the highest and lowest honoraria for Mayor from the median equation.  The Committee considered options to further adjust for any annual increase to the honouria based economic factors such as unemployment rates or the Consumer Price Index.  Staff noted that these statistics do not just apply to the City of Barrie, but a larger geographic area.  The Committee requested that staff to provide more information regarding the unemployment rates and the Consumer Price Index at the next meeting.

A draft of a report was provided to the Committee members for review at the Committee’s next meeting.
