PRESENTATION REGARDING SMART PORTABLE VARIABLE MESSAGE BOARDS
T. Hanrahan, Supervisor of Traffic and Parking Services provided a presentation regarding Smart Portable Variable Message Boards.
Mr. Hanrahan discussed slides concerning the following topics:
• The pros and cons of the current technology the City is using for message boards;
• A description of the Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS);
• The benefits associated with using the ATIS En-Route roadside devices;
• How the Bluetooth Enabled Variable Message Boards receive and gather data;
• A map illustrating the placement of the Bluetooth Enabled Variable Message Boards along Mapleview Drive;
• Pictures illustrating potential messages for the proposed Mapleview signs; and
• The value added benefits for the message boards including future scalability, systems that are interchangeable with most displays, web-based information, constant collection of data of real time events, leveraging of existing inventory and event or emergency messaging.
In closing, Mr. Hanrahan provided details regarding the next steps for the installation of the Smart Portable Variable Message Boards along Mapleview Drive.
Members of Committee asked a number of questions regarding the presentation and received responses from City staff.
