Title: PRESENTATION BY FRANK NELSON REGARDING GLOWING HEARTS COMMUNITY GIVE AND GET. Councillor A. Prince provided an introduction of Mr. Frank Nelson and commented that Mr. Nelson is a remarkable individual who has put the community's needs above his own. He advised that Mr. Nelson was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and after some soul searching turned his focus to help the community. Councillor Prince advised that Mr. Nelson was inspired by an Ellen Degeneres give away episode of her show. He indicated that Mr. Nelson then created his bucket list including a paying-it-back initiative where Mr. Nelson gives away $1,000 at a time and he is currently at $43,000 of his $50,000 goal. Councillor Prince noted the money has not just be given to those battling cancer, as to Frank it doesn't matter he is there to help. Councillor Prince stated that Mr. Nelson is a true local hero. Councillor A. Mr. Nelson discussed slides concerning the following topics:

                     That he is a cancer survivor, but was diagnosed as terminal in 2013;

                     His bucket list on his website;

                     The Glowing Hearts Community Give and Get Program and Centre;

                     The number of volunteers, items and visitors to the Program;

                     The hours of the Centre;

                     The collaboration with other agencies and Coffee Culture; and

                     Stories associated with families and individuals that the Centre has assisted.

 

In conclusion, Mr. Nelson requested Council’s assistance to seek and help raise funds for the Program and Centre.  He commented that his goal was to open other Glowing Hearts Community Give and Get Centres in Orillia, Hamilton and North Bay.  He advised that there would a Community Give and Get Tent at the Promenade Days.

 

Members of Council asked a number of questions of Mr. Nelson and received responses.
