He noted that the award recognizes an individual, business or organization that fosters an environment of equal participation by recognizing outstanding accomplishments which result in equal opportunities for persons with disabilities in Barrie.
Mr. Bubel presented a video of MP Brown describing Mr. Stein’s achievements and contributions to increasing awareness of accessibility matters in the community. He described him as someone who represents the best elements of society. Mr. Bubel read aloud a letter to Mr. Stein from Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada recognizing his positive impact related to social change.

Mayor Lehman called upon David Morrison, Chair of the International Relations Committee and Youth Ambassador Program to provide an overview of the Youth Ambassador Program. Mr. Morrison thanked City Council for the opportunity to express appreciation to the individuals and corporations in the community that have allowed the Youth Ambassador Program to grow and flourish over the years. He stated that community support for the program is demonstrated by financial and in-kind donations. He noted that the Program has allowed over 400 students to participate in cultural and academic exchanges with communities in Japan, Germany and China.
Mr. Morrison recognized his former college Sandra Purchase stating that she was instrumental in the development of the Program. A slide show highlighting aspects of her involvement with the program was presented.

She commented that the Committee has endorsed and is promoting National Access Awareness Week taking place May 28, 2012 until June 2, 2012. Ms. Demberline explained that the Committee is hosting guest speaker, Howard Gerry who will be providing a presentation concerning accessibility and universal design in the built environment at the Southshore Community Centre on May 23, 2012 from 9:00 am until 11:30 am. Ms. Demberline concluded by thanking City Council for their commitment to persons living with disabilities throughout the community.

Scott McInnes, Owner and Al Quigley, General Manager of the Royal Event Centre provided a presentation to City Council concerning the proposed Royal Event Centre. Mr. Quigley explained that a liquor licence application has been submitted to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) for 66 Bayfield Street in Barrie. He noted that the proposal includes convention centre at the location. Mr. Quigley referred to the Downtown Next Wave Community Improvement Plan commenting that the Plan includes a convention centre and that this location meets the applicable zoning requirements. He described the proposed facility and the potential uses including: trade shows, weddings and a hall of fame for the Barrie Blues and Jazz Festival. He concluded by stating that he believes the Royal Event Centre will provide additional employment and tourism for Downtown Barrie.
