17-A-008 2  Student/Mayor ItemCOMMENTS FROM OUTGOING STUDENT MAYOR(S): Timothy Zuercher of St. Monica’s Catholic Elementary School thanked the City Council and staff for the opportunity to serve as Student Mayor. Timothy commented that he felt it was a good experience to learn about municipal government, even though sometimes the meetings were dry. 17-A-011 2  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF RICHARD STRIKWERDA FOR HIS YEARS OF VOLUNTEER EFFORTS TO “KEEP BARRIE BEAUTIFUL”. Mayor Lehman called upon Mr. Richard Strikwerda to join him at the podium. Mayor Lehman commented that Mr. Strikwerda started volunteering approximately ten years ago by picking up litter, and cutting the long grass along the strip of Highway 400 to Bayfield Street. He noted that Mr. Strikwerda ensured that visitors as well as residents of Barrie experienced a nice welcome into the City. Mayor Lehman discussed Mr. Strikwerda’s volunteer efforts throughout the years whether it be planting flowers, picking up litter or cleaning up at the Gables property. Mayor Lehman noted that in 2016 Mr. Strikwerda picked up approximately 81,250 pieces of litter and over the years this brings his total to 1,060,250 pieces. He announced that he would like to recognize Mr. Strikwerda for keeping the City of Barrie beautiful and presented him with a certificate and an orchid, and thanked him for all his volunteer efforts. 17-A-012 2  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF KAITLYN SOULES FOR HER ACTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH SAVING THE LIVES OF HER FAMILY FROM A HOUSE FIRE. Mayor Lehman invited Kaitlyn Soules to join him at the podium to be recognized for her actions associated with saving the lives of her family from a house fire. Mayor Lehman described the incident indicating that in the early morning hours of June 14, 2016, Kaitlyn age 12, woke up to the smell of smoke wafting through her Barrie home. He commented that Kaitlyn acted quickly by running and waking up her family including her two brothers Dennis Jr, age 13 and Gordon, age 9 to ensure that they were safely out of the house fire. Mayor Lehman advised that Kaitlyn’s home was destroyed by that fire. Mayor Lehman discussed how Kaitlyn’s act of bravery and quick thinking resulted in saving the lives of her family instead of it being a major tragedy. He indicated that the Award of Merit was created to recognize acts of incredible bravery that save lives.
