Title: RED SIGNAL/LIGHT CAMERA PRESENTATION Ms. Dawn McAlpine, City Clerk/Director of Legislative and Court Services provided a presentation regarding Red Signal/Light Cameras. Ms. McAlpine explained that Mr. Dave Friary, Director of Roads, Parks and Fleet, Mr. Steve Rose, Manager of Traffic and Parking Services, Mr. Rodger Bates, Manager of Court Services and Mr. Tom Hanrahan, Supervisor of Traffic and Parking Services worked together as a team to investigate the feasibility of implementing Red Light Cameras. RED SIGNAL/LIGHT CAMERA PRESENTATION

 

Ms. Dawn McAlpine, City Clerk/Director of Legislative and Court Services provided a presentation regarding Red Signal/Light Cameras.  Ms. McAlpine explained that Mr. Dave Friary, Director of Roads, Parks and Fleet, Mr. Steve Rose, Manager of Traffic and Parking Services, Mr. Rodger Bates, Manager of Court Services and Mr. Tom Hanrahan, Supervisor of Traffic and Parking Services worked together as a team to investigate the feasibility of implementing Red Light Cameras.

 

Ms. McAlpine discussed slides concerning the following topics:

 

                     The motion adopted by Council to investigate the feasibility of implementing Red Light Cameras;

                     The explanation of what constitutes a red light running violation in Ontario;

                     The goal of a Red Light Camera Program;

                     The steps required to implement Red Light Cameras;

                     The statistics and related charges associated with collisions in Barrie;

                     The statistics associated with a traffic study undertaken in January and February 2016 related to intersection collisions in Barrie;

                     Red Signal Running observations at certain intersections in Barrie;

                     The costs associated with implementing Red Light Cameras;

                     The staff resources required to implement Red Light Cameras;

                     The penalties and revenues associated with Red Light Cameras;

                     Potential revenue scenarios related to Red Light Camera violations; and

                     Barrie Police Service comments regarding Red Light Cameras.

 

In conclusion, Ms. McAlpine discussed the percentage of charges related to running red lights; the expense to initiate a Red Light Camera Program and other traffic safety initiatives that may be more effective and less costly to implement.

 

Members of the Committee and a Member of Council present asked several questions related to the information provided and received responses from City Staff.
