SUPPORT FOR 2023 INTERNATIONAL ICE HOCKEY FEDERATION (IIHF) WOMEN'S WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS - PRE-COMPETITION HOST COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY
WHEREAS the 2023 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship will be hosted by Hockey Canada and the Ontario Women's Hockey Association in Brampton, Ontario from April 5 to 16, 2023; and,
WHEREAS Hockey Canada is currently seeking proposals from interested communities who would like to act as World Championship pre-competition hosts, with five Ontario communities selected to each host two of the international teams that will spend 7-10 days in their host community for a pre-competition training camp, along with at least one exhibition game; and,
WHEREAS the Barrie Women's Hockey Association is working with the City of Barrie's Recreation and Culture Services Department, Tourism Barrie, and several other community and business partners to submit a host community proposal to Hockey Canada; and,
WHEREAS the Barrie Women's Hockey Association and Tourism Barrie have both committed $5,000, for a total of $10,000, towards hosting activities for the international teams; and,
WHEREAS being a pre-competition host community will yield positive benefit to the community, including an estimated economic impact of over $119,711 according to Ontario Ministry of Tourism TREIM report methodology, along with provincial, national, and international exposure for our community, and will also be an important opportunity to showcase Barrie as an excellent destination for future high-level sports events; and,
WHEREAS support from elected officials is a requirement of Hockey Canada for any proposal to be considered,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED as follows:
1. That a letter be issued through the Mayor's Office expressing Barrie City Council's support for the Barrie Women's Hockey Association's pre-competition host community proposal for the 2023 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championships.
