COMMUNITY ANTI-RACISM INITIATIVES
Rob Meier discussed systemic racism and the underlying undertones of racism present within the community. He suggested the possibility of putting forward a motion for the City of Barrie to become an anti-racist city.
Donald Carty provided a brief background on the Anti-Racism Task Force established through a resolution by Barrie City Council and sponsored by Barrie Police Service. He advised the Task Force has a compliment of volunteers that were chosen to work actively with the community. Mr. Carty discussed the Task Force's mandate to bridge and promote a stronger, positive understanding of anti-racism and the representation of racialized groups within the City. He advised that implementation of the mandate to be accomplished through awareness, education, accountability, and their five action themes to effect positive change: understanding, messaging, connecting, transitioning, and strengthening. Mr. Carty discussed various initiatives the Task Force is currently working on associated to public awareness and communication to transition Barrie into an anti-racist city.
Brian Muscat, Georgian College discussed the College's efforts and work towards anti-racism. Mr. Muscat advised that the College has had an increase in the number of international students attending and have been seeing an increase in overt-racism and micro-aggression at the College.
Leanne Jackson, Georgian College talked about equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism work efforts at the College. Ms. Jackson discussed the College's participation in the City's Community Safety and Well-being Committee, and the Anti-Racism Task Force. She also discussed Georgian College taking a lead role in launching a Barrie Inclusion Network to bring together different organizations and partners within the community to create information sharing and common ground on goals.
