11-A-016 2  Presentation - AC/RC2010 BARRIE ARTS AWARDS RECIPIENTS The Mayor called upon Rudi Quammie Williams to recognize the 2010 Barrie Arts Awards recipients. Mr. Williams noted that the purpose of the awards is to acknowledge the excellence and dedication of Barrie residents who choose to make a significant contribution to the community in the area of arts and culture. Mr. Williams provided a brief biography and background for each of the following award recipients: · Madison Angus - Most Promising Youth Award · Ted Fullerton - Excellence in the Arts Award · Claudine Benoit - Contribution to the Community Award · David Ball and Leigh-Anne Martin - Emerging Artist Award · Dr. Bruce Meyer - Poet Laureate Madison Angus winner of the Most Promising Youth Award provided a vocal performance entitled “Is It Really Me?”. Poet Laureate, Dr. Bruce Meyer presented an original Poem entitled “The Spirit Catcher”. Mr. Williams provided a brief outline of the background for Mr. Hummel, designer of the 2010 Barrie Arts Awards. 11-A-022 2  Presentation - AC/RCROYAL VICTORIA HOSPITAL PROGRESS UPDATE Mayor J. Lehman called upon Jon Babulic, Chair of the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) Board of Directors to introduce Scott Elliott, Vice Chair of the RVH Foundation, Janice Skot, President and Chief Executive Officer of RVH and Susanne Legue, Senior Director of Corporate Communications to provide a presentation to members of City Council concerning the Royal Victoria Hospital progress update. S. Elliott thanked the City of Barrie on behalf of the staff and volunteers of RVH for the 52.5 million dollar investment the City of Barrie had made towards the RVH expansion project. S. Elliott noted at the time, the City had made the largest investment towards a hospital capital project in the province of Ontario. He commented that the City lead the way and started the “I Believe” Capital Campaign. J. Skot provided an update regarding the Phase One Expansion Project. 11-A-023 2  Presentation - AC/RCHERITAGE OF THE ALLANDALE-BARRIE RAILWAY Cathy Colebatch of the Allandale Neighbourhood Association introduced Mitchell Wilson of the Allandale Railway Historical Association and Bill Scott of the Allandale Neighbourhood Association. M. Wilson provided a presentation regarding the heritage of the Allandale-Barrie Railway. He provided a brief history of Ontario’s first railway and explained how the railway was expanded then destroyed by a fire in 1894. M. Wilson noted that in 1905 the New Allandale Station complex was open and in 1922 the railway was acquired by Canadian National Railway. M. Wilson described the decline of the railway. He concluded his presentation by noting that the City of Barrie purchased the Allandale Station from CN in 1997. Ms. Colebatch commented that she believes the citizens of Barrie have an interest in the City’s rail history and that Allandale Station has significant value to Barrie’s history. 11-A-024 2  Presentation - AC/RCBARRIE WINDCATCHERS’ PROPOSAL TO INSTALL A WIND TURBINE AT THE LANDFILL SITE Peter Bursztyn, Co-Chair of the Barrie WindCatchers addressed City Council to provide an open delegation concerning the Barrie WindCatchers’ proposal to install a wind turbine at the landfill site. He requested that City Council consider the installation of the wind turbine in the near future and outlined that installing a wind turbine would add to the City of Barrie’s long list of environmental initiatives, which he believes are not readily visible. He provided an overview of his views of the benefits of the wind turbine and urged City Council to consider the proposal. 11-A-025 2  Presentation - AC/RCTWO PROPOSALS FOR A WINTER TENNIS FACILITY UTILIZING CITY OWNED PROPERTIES Jane Suderman, Board Advisor and Mr. Ray Demiray, President of the Barrie Community Tennis Club Inc. addressed City Council to provide an open delegation concerning two proposals for a winter tennis facility utilizing city owned properties. Ms. Suderman noted that one proposal involved the renovation on 79 Bell Farm Road and the second was placing a tennis bubble at Lennox Park. She outlined the club’s perspective of the benefits associated with the provision of providing a winter tennis facility in the City of Barrie.
