Councillor A. Kungl advised that she, Kelly Patterson-McGrath, and John Northcote had been connecting, as a working group, to move forward in the planning of the Bike the Night event for the City of Barrie. Councillor Kungl specified that correspondence had been forwarded to the Committee from the working group concerning the proposed route.
John Northcote shared a map depicting the first draft of the five-kilometre route and discussed the targeted dates and time for the event. Mr. Northcote indicated the considerations for the route, such as minimal grading, fewer left turns for safety, relatively flat surfaces, and ways to safely turn around for those that do not want to do the full route.
The Committee discussed and asked questions regarding the route direction, the construction along Dunlop Street, reasons for the date and time of the event, safety reflectors on bicycles for riding in darkness, sponsorships, LED light decorations, potential bicycle availabilities, applying for Federal funding, education, and promotion of the event. Brett Gratrix, Transportation Planning Lead provided an update on various discussions and feedback received from a recent Public Information Centre (PIC), such as creating an urban streetscape rather than a suburban streetscape, two-lane options, a spring PIC to present results of planning alternatives, better cycling infrastructure, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Mr. Gratrix further discussed the Federal Government’s ban with respect to internal combustible vehicles by 2035, and the alternatives to roundabouts and the conventional intersection.
The Committee continued discussions on the two-lane options, roundabouts, heavy traffic, pedestrian and cyclist safety, bicycle lanes, and internal combustible vehicle ban. Members of the Committee asked questions of Mr. Gratrix and received responses. | Received | |

Eric van Wesenbeeck mentioned an older neighbourhood in the City, Old Painswick, which contains a number of yield signs throughout. Mr. van Wesenbeeck inquired why the idea was never considered in other parts of the City, if it is operating efficiently and safely, rather than using roundabouts or stop signs, to reduce vehicle emissions and noise from stopping and starting.

Mr. Rankin indicated that there will be a presentation at the February 8, 2022, City Building Committee meeting from an expert from Bio Forests concerning the different management options for this coming year and providing an update on what could be expected in the spring, in terms of the Gypsy Moths and hotspots.
Members of the Committee asked questions of staff regarding City owned trees and whether staff would attend to remove the eggs before they hatched in May and discussed the potential for volunteers to help with the egg scraping.
