The Committee provided ideas and feedback for the Committee’s work plan to be accomplished for the 2022-2026 term. They discussed items that included accessible housing, accessible transportation, seniors’ access to emergency services, educating seniors and building awareness on the long-term care crisis and how to age at home, a seniors and accessibility fair to take place during the National AccessAbility Week and Seniors Month in 2024, accessible parks, and the move of the Barrie Advance newspaper to a digital-only model.

Cheryl Dillon, Abilities and Accessibility Management Specialist, reported that part of the process of updating the City’s 2022 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan is surveying the community to obtain senior and accessibility concerns. Committee members suggested areas to be included in the survey, including seniors’ access to services, parks and Senior Centres, designated seniors’ parking, communication methods and the importance of paper communication, suggested changes or improvements to Senior Centres, sidewalk conditions, perceived support from the community, subjective rating of personal activity level and the main barriers people encounter, perceived access to healthcare, and community safety.
