14-A-089 2  Student/Mayor ItemCOMMENTS FROM OUTGOING STUDENT MAYOR(S) Ben Gilbart of Monsignor Clair Catholic School commented that he has been fortunate to be by elected his peers as Student Mayor. He stated that he was amazed by the amount of effort and skill it takes to be part of City Council. He acknowledged the plaque in the chambers highlighting “The people are the City” and indicated that the City is run by dedicated individuals with a passion for politics and the well-being of the City. Ben remarked that Barrie is a beautiful city full of intensity with things to do and sites to see. He observed that he has lived in Barrie all his of life and truly thinks that Barrie is above beyond any other lakefront community. Ben noted he enjoyed being able to participate in the decision making process and found it interesting and informative. He stated that he found the discussions related to 196 Burton Avenue compelling and appealing, making it an interesting evening as participants from both sides were well spoken. Mr. Chris McBrien of the Barrie Fair, provided a presentation regarding the 2014 Barrie Fair. He advised that the first Fall Fair was held in 1853 and as a result the Barrie Fair is celebrating its 161th Anniversary this year. Mr. McBrien commented that the Fair provides an opportunity for community, and particularly youth to connect with rural settings, history and heritage. He provided an overview of activities that will be held as part of this year’s Barrie Fair, including promotion of local food growers and local heritage as well as numerous youth oriented events. Mr. McBrien observed that the for the last 160 years, the Fair has not focused on city limits, but community as a whole and it needs the City’s help to attract people from outside of the community. He requested support from the City in order to keep the tradition alive and noted that the Fair is just outside of town, where the city and country meet.
