15-A-113 2  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF BARRIE FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICE PERSONNEL FOR THEIR ACTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH SAVING A LIFE IN CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP. Mayor Lehman introduced Deputy Fire Chief Bill Boyes. Deputy Chief Boyes commented that he was proud to be in attendance at City Council for the recognition. He introduced Seth Rowe, the gentleman whose life was saved, his wife Jamie and Fire Chief Colin Shewell of Clearview Township. Deputy Chief Boyes discussed the extent of the rescue efforts and involvement of the City of Barrie, Township of Clearview, City of Toronto Fire Service and other agencies. He detailed the challenges faced by the team during the rescue efforts. He acknowledged and thanked Yolanda Gallo and Gilbert McInnis for initially contacting Barrie Fire and Emergency Service about the situation. Mayor Lehman reiterated the details of the extreme conditions that the fire fighters faced and expressed his appreciation for the coordination and team work of the multiple agencies. 15-A-114 2  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF THE BARRIE PIPES AND DRUMS ON WINNING THE NORTH AMERICAN PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIP, GRADE 5. Mr. Matt Kiegelmann of the Barrie Pipes and Drums discussed how the Band has grown over the last 5 years and announced that the Barrie Pipes and Drums were the North American Pipe Band Champions Grade 5. He provided details on the history of the Band, its success and the dedication of the members. Mr. Kiegelmann provided details of the the North American Championship that was held in Maxville, Ontario. He announced that they would be participating in a World Competition in Scotland in 2017. Mayor Lehman presented Mr. Keigelmann with a plaque to recognize the accomplishment of the Barrie Pipes and Drums and commented how the Band represents the City of Barrie so well at a number of events. 15-A-115 2  Awards and RecognitionWELCOME TO THE GERMAN STUDENT DELEGATION. Mr. Dave Morrison, Chair of the International Relations Committee provided the history of the Global Perspectives Student Exchange program in Barrie and discussed past and future initiatives and visits of the group. He advised that the student exchange participants and delegation leaders from Zweibrucken Germany were in the audience. Mr. Michael Behnke, a teacher at the Helmholst Gymnasium, spoke on behalf of the German delegation. He discussed the success and value of the exchange program and thanked City Council for their support of the program. Herr Behnke presented a gift to Mayor Lehman on behalf of the Town Council of Zweibrucken. 15-A-116 2  Awards and RecognitionPRESENTATION REGARDING THE COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM GRAND CHAMPIONS SILVER 5 BLOOM RATING AWARD, NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT WINTERLIFE AWARD AND RECOGNITION FOR EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS FIELD MAINTENANCE FOR THE SPORTS COMPLEX. Councillor Romita, Chair of the Communities in Bloom Committee announced that on October 3, 2015 in Kamloops, British Columbia the City of Barrie was awarded the “Five Bloom” Silver Rating with Special Mention for Excellence in Sports Field Maintenance at the Barrie Community Sports Complex in the Class of Grand Champions category. She noted that this category includes municipalities who have been overall winners at both the National and International Communities in Bloom levels. Councillor Romita also announced that the City of Barrie was awarded with the Outstanding Achievement Winterlife Award in recognition of the City’s efforts for its winter activities and festivals such as Winterfest.
