Walter Fischer, Supervisor of Parks Planning and Development provided a definition of active transportation as well as the methods and benefits related to it. He discussed a community workshop that was held by the City of Barrie in to 2008 to formulate an Active Transportation Plan for the City of Barrie. He advised of the recommendations resulting from the workshop including the establishment of a working group comprised of local organizations and businesses that in partnership with the City would promote and support car-free alternative forms of transportation. He noted that one of the initiatives of the group; called Active Transportation Barrie is to recognize local initiatives, community groups and individuals who exemplify the principles of active transportation.
Mr. Fischer called upon Mayor Lehman to present certificates to the recipients of the 2016 Active Transportation Awards.

Walter Fischer, Supervisor of Parks Planning and Development advised that in 2014, City staff were approached by a group of local business owners interested in donating outdoor exercise equipment to be installed on Barrie’s waterfront and as a result a Waterfront Fitness Working Group (WFWG) was established with representation from these business donors and City staff in the Engineering and Roads, Park and Fleet Departments. He noted that this Working Group ensured that attributes of the equipment met the requirements and expectations of the City.
Mr. Fischer commented that the goal of the fitness circuit design was to create a “training excursion” comprised of various station locations along the waterfront. He advised that the original fundraising goal was $30,000 from approximately six local businesses and that in the end, $79,500 from 15 different businesses and organizations from across the City was received.

He noted that the picture demonstrates the use of the ice rink and it is a delightful piece that captures the fun of the season. 1. 2. That the Waste Management By-law 85-163 being a By-law to establishing and maintaining a system for the collection, removal and disposal of garbage, ashes and other refuse within the City be repealed.
3. That the Director of Environmental Services be recognized as the Designated Municipal Official for the purposes of administering and enforcing the Waste Management By-law and that staff in the Environmental Services Department be authorized to administer and enforce the Waste Management By-law.
4. That staff be authorized to make application to the Ministry of the Attorney General for the establishment of set fines ranging from $100.00 to a maximum of $1,000.00 for the purposes of enforcing the By-law.
