McCann provided details of a contest for Ward 10 students to write an essay related to why they love Barrie. He commented that he introduced this initiative to bring the Ward 10 community closer together by having a fun contest. Councillor McCann advised that Liam Surka was the winner of this year’s contest. Councillor McCann remarked that after reading the submissions he felt good about the future of Barrie residents. He noted that Liam’s essay was genuine and brought back memories for him of growing up in the City of Barrie. Liam read his essay as follows: “Barrie is an amazing city! From sports teams to beaches and the Wibit, to ski hills and trails, here are some of my favourite things about the city I call home. I love Barrie because of the bike trails.
